NEWS:

9/25/24

I am often asked: “How many figures do I need to play Hounds of War?” That got  me thinking in a broader sense on HOW we play Hounds of War. To that point this article will attempt to lay out an organized method of planning armies in Hounds of War.

Standard Scale

In a regular point balanced game, Hounds of War is generally played in the 2k (intro) to 10k (max) per player.  In a 2k game, depending on genre played, this can translate to a leader and 5-25 models. Most community style games are between 5-6k per player. In a large game, we’ll play 10k per player  in order to allow each player to field those bigger models (i.e. stompas) or  units (i.e. walls of pikes). 20k per side game is recommended for a big game divided amongst the players evenly. A typical casual game at a friend’s house or intro convention game fits these parameters.

Design Note: Every army needs to have one overall commander to lead it.

Additionally, we strive to keep the size  of games to 26 units, or half an activation deck, in total. Once a game gets into the 4th suit of activation cards, the game play slows down significantly.

Grand Scale

Grand Scale games are played generally without points for fun, to enact much larger game scales such as in Napoleonics where a unit would represent 5-700 men. In Grand Scale games, we build forces based on the “brigade size” and balance to the overall command point level of the armies.  As a good playing size, each player should command one “brigade”, consisting of a combination of 3-7 command points.

1 command point consists of:

1 brigade/division/corps commander, 1 infantry battalion, 1 cavalry troop, or 1 artillery battery

Design Note: In Grand Scale games, to represent greater emphasis on command and control, each element of a “brigade” should reside in the command radius of the brigade commander. Brigade commanders should remain within the command radius of the division commander, and so on up through the army scales.

Additionally, activation cards are issued to the commanders (brigade/division/corps), not to the unit commanders.
